Spanish < > English interpreting: e-Champions League Finals 2022
Case: Spanish < > English interpreting: e-Champions League Finals 2022
Client: Telepathic production company
Event: EA FIFA 22 eCHAMPIONS LEAGUE
Venue: Space Arena, Stockholm, and streamed worldwide online.
Service rendered: Consecutive interpreting (English < > Spanish).
The FIFA 22 eChampions League is a unique tournament on the FIFA e-sports calendar, as it’s tied directly to its real-life counterpart, taking place the day before the UEFA Champions League proper. The tournament is the game’s most prestigious solo e-sport event.
Telepathic are experts in creating impactful and unique experiences for brands. On this occasion the brand was the EA FIFA 22 eChampions League, where they were tasked with the streaming of the event to an international audience.
The event took place at Space Arena in Stockholm; a brand-new custom-built arena for e-sports in central Stockholm. It’s a digital centre of culture with a high-tech, 500-seat arena and an 8K, 19 x 5m LED screen. Telepathic came to Avison for help with the on-stage and backstage interpreting for the interviews with some of the players. The request was for consecutive interpreting between Spanish and English. One of these players was Argentinian runner up, Matías Bonanno, who pocketed USD 50,000 for his second place on the day. Winner, fellow Argentinian Nicolas Villalba, took home 75,000. You catch the live stream on YouTube here if you’re interested.
Avison’s interpreter translates the live-streamed interview with the player, between English and Spanish.
It really was an exciting event to be involved in, and I decided to go and watch the event live, having never seen anything like this before. It made for enthralling viewing, and it was also fascinating to see our interpreter, Magnus, harnessing his many years of interpreting experience, live on stage for the interviews.
As well as the tournament, the commentary, the live presenters, the atmosphere and the colossal screen, there was also some football greatness in the room. Some legends of the game from both Sweden and further afield came to watch, but also to take part in the e-sport football icons segment of the event. Entertaining – but they should stick to the punditry!
